CELLULAR COVERAGE: A SUCCESSFUL WEEK OF ACTION IN MY RIDING!

CELLULAR COVERAGE: A SUCCESSFUL WEEK OF ACTION IN MY RIDING!

I met over 150 people during my week of action on cellular coverage. The three public meetings were held on March 11, 12 and 13 and were highly successful. Each evening, more than 50 residents from my riding came to discuss this issue with me.

Currently, 11 out of 39 municipalities have little or no access to the cellular network in the riding.

Rural connectivity is a major issue in Canada since telecommunications services are not meeting the demand.

The issue is overall economic, difficulties to access the cellular network undermines the region's economic dynamism. It is also a safe issue: in emergencies, people in my region are not even able to call for help.

These public consultations allowed me to understand the concerns and listen to testimonies from entrepreneurs, local representatives, and citizens of the region. Many of them deplore the lack or poor quality of cellular signals in their municipalities.

These meetings gave me the opportunity to put forward a realistic solution to the problem: the creation of a Canadian Mobile and Internet Infrastructure Agency.

Such an agency would be an independent organization funded by the major telecommunications companies according to their market shares.

A governmental agency will know where to invest when companies alone have no incentive to do so. The infrastructure built by the agency will allow telecommunications companies to develop a reliable network in the region.

The Liberal government must listen to us, cell phones are no longer a luxury, it has become a necessity. Be assured that I will fight to ensure that people in my riding have the same access to the cellular network as the rest of the population.
